Day 1
Auckland to Hamilton

Distance 125km - Driving Time 1 hour, 45 minutes

Your foodie road trip begins in Auckland, heading south through a landscape that shifts from city skylines to wide-open farmland. As you leave the motorway behind, the pace slows, with green pastures, quiet country roads, and pockets of native bush lining the way. 

Plan your first stop at Pōkeno Bacon, a local institution known for its award-winning bacon and handcrafted sausages. Whether you sit down for a classic Kiwi breakfast or stock up on gourmet supplies for the road, it’s the perfect way to fuel up for the drive ahead. 

A little further along, Hamilton offers a change of pace with a stop at Zealong Tea Estate. This is New Zealand’s only commercial tea plantation, where you can take a guided tour, learn about the art of tea-making, and enjoy a tasting overlooking the neatly manicured tea fields.

Hamilton to Rotorua

Further along, take a detour to Mamaku Blue, a boutique blueberry farm just outside Rotorua. Here, you can sample everything from fresh and frozen berries to blueberry wines and liqueurs. If you’re up for something different, their blueberry ice cream is well worth a try. 

For a true taste of Rotorua, spend the evening at Te Puia, where you can experience a traditional Māori hāngī. Cooked underground using heated rocks, this slow-cooked feast includes tender meats, root vegetables, and rewena (Māori bread), all infused with a rich, smoky flavour. While you're there, explore the geothermal valley, watch the Pōhutu Geyser erupt, and see master carvers and weavers keeping traditional Māori arts alive.

Napier to Wellington

Distance 325km - Driving Time 4 hours

There’s a mix of long, open highways and more winding sections as you approach Wellington, making it a journey best broken up with a few well-timed food stops. 

A couple of hours in, Kākā Café at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre is an ideal place to stretch your legs. Overlooking the forest, it serves locally roasted coffee and simple, tasty meals – plus, you might spot a kākā (a native parrot) while you eat.

Wellington to Picton

Before you set sail, take a morning wander through Hannahs Laneway, a hidden gem in Wellington’s city centre. Picton to Blenheim

For wine lovers, Cloudy Bay is a must-visit. One of Marlborough’s most iconic wineries, it offers tastings of its renowned sauvignon blanc and pinot noir, best enjoyed in the peaceful courtyard with vineyard views. 

As the day winds down, settle in at Spring Creek Holiday Park. Set among trees and gardens, with a peaceful stream running through, it’s a relaxing place to recharge before heading further south. 

 

Day 7
Blenheim to Nelson

Distance 118km - Driving Time 1 hour, 30 minutes

The drive from Blenheim to Nelson takes you through some of the South Island’s most scenic coastal and mountain landscapes. Winding past vineyards, rivers, and national parks, it’s a route worth taking your time on, with plenty of great food stops along the way. 

Halfway through the journey, make a stop in Havelock, the green-lipped mussel capital of the world. There’s no better place to try them than The Mussel Pot, where they’re served in a variety of ways – from classic steamed mussels to rich, flavour-packed chowder. 

As you get closer to Nelson, take a break in the craft beer hub of Riwaka. Hop Federation is a small but well-respected brewery with a tasting room offering fresh, hop-forward beers. Whether you prefer a crisp pilsner, a hazy IPA, or something experimental, it’s a great way to experience the flavours of the region.

Nelson to Punakaiki

Punakaiki to Franz Josef

Today’s drive takes you deeper into the untamed beauty of the West Coast, where rugged cliffs give way to lush rainforest and glacier-carved valleys. This stretch of road is made for unhurried travel, with plenty of character-filled stops along the way.  

A great midway break is Hokitika, famous for its pounamu (greenstone). At the Hokitika Craft Gallery, you’ll find beautifully carved jewellery and artwork crafted by local artisans. If you're visiting in March, you might also catch the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival, a legendary event where adventurous foodies can sample everything from huhu grubs to whitebait patties. 

Further south, The Brewery in Ross is a great spot to refuel. This small craft brewery, set in a historic gold-mining town, serves up woodfired pizzas alongside a rotating selection of West Coast beers.
