This is exactly what my best gal-pal and I did when we picked up a maui motorhome for a perfect long weekend. During our blissful few days at the beach, my friend became so enamoured of the lifestyle that she bought her own motorhome and spent three months on the road the following year, travelling the length of the country with her partner.
For our first trip away together, we chose a four-berth maui motorhome with a generous rear lounge surrounded on three sides by picture windows; perfect for reversing up to the view. In our case, this was beautiful Tauranga Bay, a few hours’ drive north of Auckland.
Wherever you live in New Zealand, it’s certain that you will be just a short drive from a stunning waterfront camp, be that riverside, lakeside or beachside. Stock up along the way with everything you need. Start off as you mean to go on by shopping for ingredients to create the perfect platter to accompany a tipple or two at sundown.
When considering which motorhome to choose think about how you will use it. We chose a four berth Cascade with two queen beds (one that pulls down from the roof), but you might be just as happy with a smaller four berth maui motorhome with a single and double bed. Equally if you want more space, grab a maui Beach, a four berth motorhome that will provide you with even more space.
My advice is to not be intimidated by the vehicle’s size, even if you have not driven a motorhome before. Contemporary design is aero-dynamic with plenty of get up and go under the bonnet. Extra-large mirrors for safety and rear-view cameras will assist you to adjust quickly to the extra size and you will soon feel as if you are driving the family car.
But the bonus of a motorhome getaway with your bestie is that you will have a bach on meals with a good kitchen, bathroom, and beds, all within easy reach; with views that are ever-changing.
And if you’re anything like us you’ll still be talking about how great it was years later. You may even be persuaded to make a lifestyle out of it, as we have.
