The best day trips from Brisbane

The maui Brisbane branch is conveniently located within easy reach of both the city and the airport, making it a simple, stress-free process to pick up your motorhome. The beauty of van travel is that you can take your time on the road, park up at some incredible places, and enjoy endless delicious picnics in nature. It also gives you so much freedom when visiting areas, and opens you up to finding some gems along the way, that you may not have passed through otherwise. There really is no better way to travel.

1. Moreton Island National Park

A visit to Moreton Island National Park is something not to be missed. The island is the ideal spot to soak up the sun and get the adrenaline pumping. Depending on which time of year you visit you might also have the opportunity to meet the locals - feed dolphins or go whale watching! We recommend you park up your camper and take the ferry across for the day. 4WD vehicles only are allowed on the island. 

 

2.   Peel Island 

Peel Island is a great day out that we’re sure you’ll love as it invites you to relax, unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. You can leave your maui camper for the day and head over to the island on a day trip. While on the island you can swim in the crystal clear waters of the picturesque Horseshoe Bay and Platypus Bay, and for those who love to snorkel, you can explore the shipwreck that is full of sea life and is located just off Platypus Bay. There are an abundance of native animals who call this island home to keep an eye out for, such as an array of birds, dugongs, turtles and dolphins that will make a day trip here all the more exciting.


3.   Caloundra

Next on our list is a day trip to the coastal town of Caloundra. This drive is 93 km from the city of Brisbane and will take a little over an hour to get to. With beautiful beaches, incredible dining options and a vibrant main street, this is sure to be a great day trip that the whole family will love. While here a dip in the King’s Beach ocean pool is a must. This is a go-to swimming spot for locals and visitors alike and is located right in the heart of Caloundra. After a refreshing dip, you can wander up to the dining precinct for a coffee and bite to eat at one of the drool-worthy cafes. Those wanting to shop will be in luck with the array of boutique shops on offer, and a stroll down Bulcock Street is sure to impress with the incredible street art that is on show.

4.   Canungra

In the Gold Coast hinterland is Canungra. To get here, you drive south from Brisbane city for around an hour through beautiful rolling countryside. This historic and charming town is located on the Scenic Rim and is full of natural beauty. You can pop into a cute café, wander through one of the local galleries and stop in at the historic Canungra Hotel for lunch, before going on a walk through the national park or driving up to one of the lookout points to take in the panoramic views.

 

5.   Queen Mary Falls

If you’re craving some time in nature and want an awe-inspiring experience, then head out to the Queen Mary Falls. The picturesque country drive, which is around two hours, will take you inland from the Gold Coast to the Southern Downs area. The landscape out here consists of rugged mountains, panoramic lookout points, nature-filled walks and lush forests that are home to an array of native wildlife. Pack a picnic, enjoy it under the shade of soaring mature trees, before embarking on the walk to the Queen Mary Falls. Here you’ll be in awe as Spring Creek cascades 40m to the valley below.

 

6.   North Stradbroke Island

North Stradbroke Island, which is situated off the coast of Brisbane is a wonderful day trip to be enjoyed. Or if you have the time, pack some supplies in your camper and enjoy a few days exploring the island and camping by the sea. There are some great surf beaches to explore here, as well as peaceful pockets where you can hire a stand up paddle board to get out on the water. Your camper can access most of the island, meaning you can get around and see all that it has to offer, before stopping in for a bite to eat at one of the eateries, or enjoying a picnic on the grass overlooking one of the beaches.

7.   Toowoomba

The country town of Toowoomba is next on our list and is easily accessible from the city of Brisbane. Driving inland from the city for 1 hour and 40 minutes will have you in town where beautiful gardens and parks are on show and there is plenty to see and do. Known as the garden city, this is Queensland’s largest inland city and is full of charm around every corner. History lovers will want to stop in at the Cobb and Co Museum where there are a huge range of exhibitions and activities to explore and marvel at which will have the whole family captivated. If you’re feeling like relaxing in the shade with a delicious picnic then there are two parks that we highly recommend. The Laurel Bank Park is an oasis in the city and will be a perfect spot for a bite to eat. The other is Queen’s Park which boasts spectacular flower gardens and botanical gardens, as well as lovely pathways to follow along and great shaded areas for a picnic lunch.



8.   Tamborine Mountain

An hour drive south of the city will have you at Tamborine Mountain. This area is full of beauty around every turn and a great day trip to add to your travel itinerary. Nature lovers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to bush walks and hikes, plus there are some awe-inspiring lookouts that you can either walk or drive to that will offer a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.

While visiting this area, the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is a must-do. This eco-adventure is a unique way to explore the rainforest canopies. Nestled in lush rainforest and soaring over crystal clear rock pools and tropical plants, this is a spectacular addition to every road trip. After time in nature we suggest stopping in at Tamborine Mountain Distillery to enjoy a tasting of their incredible liqueurs and spirits, before heading into town for a little shop and bite to eat at one of the tasty eateries.


9.   Glasshouse mountains

Chances are you’ve heard of the majestic Glass House Mountains, so it’s no surprise that they have made is to our day trip list. Located just 70 km north of Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast, this group of mountains create a stunning backdrop as they rise dramatically from the surrounding landscape. There is a scenic drive you can take that is a 25 km loop that will take you through the heart of the mountains, offering spectacular views of the mountains and surrounding countryside. There is also a lookout you can drive up to that will give you a panoramic view of this breathtakingly beautiful area. During the warmer months, or even in the cooler months if you’re up for a chilly dip, there are the Gardener Falls that invite you to jump in before enjoying a picnic lunch. Garden lovers are also sure to want to visit the Maleny Botanic Gardens. With a vast selection of exotic and native plants on show, as well as views of the surrounding Glass House Mountains, this botanic garden is full of beauty.

10. Shorncliffe

Set on the northern coastline of Brisbane is the charming coastal town of Shorncliffe. Known for its rich history, stunning scenery and beautiful beaches, this is an easy day trip from Brisbane. Take a stroll along the Shorncliffe Pier that dates back to 1884, and enjoy the refreshing sea breezes, panoramic ocean views and even spot schools of fish swimming under the pier. Another relaxing walk to enjoy when visiting this town is Lover’s Walk. This walk stretches along the coastline and offers picturesque views of the surrounding countryside to one side and the ocean to the other. You can enjoy a picnic or tasty fish and chips by the ocean, before heading to the next destination on your road trip itinerary.


11. Bribie Island

Bribie Island is another fantastic day trip that is easily accessible from Brisbane. There is a bridge that connects this 34 km long island to the mainland, which invites you across to discover its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and spectacular sunsets.

The water separating the mainland from the island is called Pumicestone Passage and is a great place to hire a paddle board, go for a kayak, enjoy a waterside picnic and swim, or cast out a line and try your hand at fishing. Bribie Island National Park, which is located on the eastern side of the island, is another great spot to stop at. Here you can witness kangaroos, wallabies and a variety of birds in their natural habitat, while taking one of the scenic bush walks or drives through the park.


12. Montville

One day trip that we absolutely love is a trip out to Montville. Situated just 95 km north of Brisbane, this charming country village is set in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and is well known for its relaxed atmosphere, picturesque scenery, spectacular waterfalls and lush rainforests. The Montville Clock Shop is an iconic place to stop in at. Here you’ll witness their impressive collection of clocks from around the world, and see how these intricate items work. Art lovers will want to visit the Montville Art Gallery where paintings, sculptures and ceramics by talented artists are on show, all within a charming cottage. If you love waterfalls and are up for a walk, then head out to Kondalilla National Park. Here you can follow one of the scenic walking trails along to the waterfalls and natural swimming holes where you can dip in to cool off.

13. Australia Zoo

It’s no surprise that the world-famous Australia Zoo has made it onto our ultimate day trips from Brisbane list. To get here you’ll head north from the city for a little over an hour towards Beerwah. This is one of the largest and most visited zoos in Australia and is home to a vast array of exotic and native animals including crocodiles, tigers, elephants, kangaroos, koalas, snakes, birds and so many more. While here you’ll get to witness these animals up close and personal, as well as learn about their behaviours and conservation efforts. You can’t go to Australia Zoo and not witness a crocodile show. These shows will leave you in awe as you witness the trainers feed these powerful animals, while discussing the behaviours and conservation efforts of the animals. There are so many animal encounters to be had, including feeding kangaroos, cuddling a koala and even holding a massive snake! You can see why we think this is a must-do day trip from Brisbane.

 

14. Noosa Heads

Noosa Heads is an area full of lush national parks, crystal clear beaches, a great dining scene and laid-back coastal vibe. Whether you go for a stroll down the iconic Hasting Street where restaurant, cafes and boutique shops are waiting to be discovered, take a drive through the hinterland, or spend some time in the sun at the beach, a day trip here is sure to leave you wanting more. Noosa National Park Coastal Walk is a must-do. This walks winds around the Noosa headlands and showcases the picturesque coves and beaches along the way, before ending at a wonderful lookout point known as Hells Gates. After this walk, which will take around 2-3 hours return, you can cool off at Noosa Main Beach, before heading up to Hastings Street to enjoy a bite to eat and drink at one of the many dining options.


15. Redcliffe

An easy 40-minute drive out of the city will have you at the picturesque coastal town of Redcliffe. Offering a relaxed coastal vibe and stunning beaches, this will be a wonderful easy trip to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The Scarborough Beach Park will be the perfect spot to park up your maui camper to enjoy a picnic, stroll on the beach and swim in the ocean. There is a playground that will be a hit with kids, as well as walking trails along the foreshore to take in the views. Redcliffe Jetty is another great place to stop in at. Here you can stroll along the jetty, cast out a fishing line and if you’re here for sunset you’ll be in for a real treat as the skies turn to night. A perfect way to end a relaxing day but the seaside.

16. Stanthorpe

Stanthorpe, which is located in the Granite Belt region, is 220 km southwest of Brisbane, is home to award-winning wineries and breweries and immense natural beauty. The drive out here will have you in awe of the stunning landscapes of rolling countryside and rock formations. A visit to the Girraween National Park is a must. Boasting ancient granite boulders, trickling creeks and breathtaking views, this park invites you to go on a walk or simply enjoy a picnic in nature. Another must-do, especially for beer lovers, is a visit to Granite Belt Brewery. This award-winning brewery invites you to come in and taste their unique range of craft beers, ciders and ginger beer, all paired perfectly with the dishes at their restaurant.


17. Sea World

Thrill seekers and marine animal lovers alike are going to love a trip to the world-famous tourist attraction, Sea World. The theme park is located around an hour’s drive from Brisbane and is sure to be a fun day out for the whole family. While here you can witness a range of marine animals including dolphins, sea lions, penguins, polar bears, fish and sharks up close, as well as learn about their habits, behaviours and conservation efforts through both the exhibits and shows. As well as animal shows, there are also water slides, pools and high-speed roller coaster rides to give you a real adrenaline boost!


18. Burleigh Heads National Park

Up next is the Burleigh Heads National Park. This beautiful coastal park is situated on the Gold Coast, around a one hour drive from the city of Brisbane. With stunning views, lush bushland and an array of wildlife to spot, this promises to be a wonderful road trip stop. You can take the Rainforest Circuit or the Ocean View Walk, both of which will allow you to witness the diverse landscape on show, including rainforest, eucalypt forest, pandanus groves and rocky foreshores which lead to pristine beaches.

19. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary 

If you travel south from Brisbane, towards the Gold Coast, you’ll come to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. This incredible wildlife sanctuary is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Australia’s native wildlife, as well as the conservation work that is going on. A visit here will also have you up close and personal with these incredible animals, including the native Australian animals koalas, kangaroos, wombats, echidnas and so much more. There are shows and presentations to marvel at, as well as a Tree Top Challenge for those looking to add a little more thrill to their time here. Plus, if you can, we highly recommend going on one of the night walks where you’ll get to spot all the nocturnal animals, such as possums, gliders and owls in their natural habitat at night.


20. Ipswich

Last on our list of the best day trips from Brisbane is the country town of Ipswich. Located just 40 km out of Brisbane, this historical town has a rich cultural heritage that is just waiting to be discovered. With beautiful parks, heritage buildings around every turn and great attractions, Ipswich is sure to be a great spot on any road trip. While here we recommend stopping in at the Ipswich Art Gallery to take in the impressive display of local and international artists. The Ipswich Nature Centre is another great place to stop in to witness their array of native animals on show, including kangaroos, wallabies and koalas, all within a peaceful natural setting. The Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve is perfect for anyone wanting to go on a bush walk. This walk leads up to a lookout from which you can take in the views of the surrounding area. After all this sight-seeing, you’ll be ready for some lunch and for this we recommend strolling along the main street in Ipswich which is home to an array of cafes and eateries, as well as boutique shops to shop at.
