Top Things to do in Auckland
Coffee
The coffee culture in New Zealand is strong. In fact, Ed Sheeran famously said that he thinks New Zealand's 'thing' should definitely be coffee, because New Zealand coffee is the best. With so many coffee shops around the city it's almost criminal not to kick-start your day with a flat white, latte or cappuccino. Our pick for best coffee in the city goes to Remedy Coffee and their extensive collection of Lonely Planet books.
Explore the harbour
Say goodbye to the 'big smoke' for a day and jump on a ferry to enjoy stunning 360 degree views. The first place everyone visits? Rangitoto. Don't get us wrong, Rangitoto should definitely be high on your list of places to visit in Auckland – but how about also adding the stunning Motuora Island? You'll enjoy beautiful beaches, secluded picnic spots, walking tracks, with chances to see a variety of native wildlife including kiwi.
Get a bird's-eye view
While everyone's taking the elevator to the top of the Sky Tower, get out in the fresh air and take a walk to the top of One Tree Hill where the view includes the Sky Tower! Enjoy a picnic in Cornwall Park and then stroll to the top of the hill and watch the sun set over the harbour. Bliss!
Check out island vineyards at Waiheke
It may only be a lazy 35 minutes from the city by ferry but Waiheke Island feels like a world away from city life. Make the most of your time on the island and jump on the Fullers wine hopper bus to check out some of the best wineries and restaurants in New Zealand. It's easy to see why Waiheke is such a popular destination for Aucklanders wanting to escape the city for the weekend.
Sunset walks and fish and chips on the beach
Another kiwi tradition that cannot be over-looked is finding your nearest fish and chip shop, getting them to take away and high-tailing it to the nearest beach. Add a romantic atmosphere by grabbing a bottle of wine and going at sunset.
Food! Glorious food!
Whether you are wanting an incredible dessert that's sure to knock your socks off or dinner with an incredible view, Auckland restaurants are some of the best in the country. Head to Britomart for a delicious dinner at Mexico or Ortolana and finish it off with something deliciously naughty at Milse!
Walk it off
Feeling full after all the delicious food you've been consuming? Go for a lazy walk along the waterfront and explore the Viaduct or beaches in Mission Bay. Perhaps you'd rather shop away the extra calories? A short walk from the city is Ponsonby and Parnell where you'll be able to shop up a storm!
Get cultural
The Auckland Museum is located in the domain and surrounded by the Botanical Gardens. You'll want a full day to uncover the secrets hidden around this area. Get educated about New Zealand culture in the museum and then enjoy one of the most scenic picnic spots in the city!
Enjoy the city vibe
It's easy to see why Auckland ranks as the third best city in the world for quality of life. Enjoy the city at its finest – a summer afternoon at the open air cinema in Silo Park, live music in Aotea Square, fine dining at The French Café or a rainy afternoon at the art gallery.
