Ultimate 10-Day Brisbane to Adelaide Road Trip

This riverside city is easily one of the best things to do in Queensland, Australia. Filled with stunning scenery, endless shopping and foodie delights, it's little wonder why! Then it's time to kick off the Queensland part of the road trip itinerary and drive west towards Toowoomba. 

You'll be surprised by the number of things to do in Toowoomba, even if you're only there for a day. The Cobb+Co Museum is an excellent place to start. It's housed in an old coach house and gives you a glimpse into what life was like for this famous transport company back in the 1800s.

There are plenty of parks to explore, too. Laurel Bank Park is one great spot, and it has lovely views as well as a spectacular display of exotic gardens across 4.5 hectares. You should also check out Toowoomba Regional Council's extensive network of walking trails. These walks weave through some truly stunning scenery throughout Queens Park Botanic Garden. This is a must-do  in any Queensland road trip itinerary.

You'll begin the day in Toowoomba, a town with a rich history and plenty to explore. Start your morning by wandering through town and grabbing a bite to eat. This park is home to an extensive range of World War II artillery pieces. 

Next up on your itinerary, it’s time to hit the road and cross the border toward Bingara, New South Wales. Along the way, you'll want to check out the Texas Heritage Centre and Tobacco Museum for an interesting look into this town’s history. Once you arrive in Bingara, stop by the Rocky Creek Glacial Area. Here you can see fascinating geological evidence of ice age glaciation.

The third day of your road trip will take you from Bingara to Dubbo in New South Wales. This route wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the hot baths in Narrabri. When you arrive, there are plenty of things to do in this New South Wales outback town. The first stop is Taronga Western Plains Zoo. This is one of Australia's most popular zoos and receives over one million visitors per year. The zoo houses both Australian native animals such as kangaroos and koalas. However, it also has exotic animals such as tigers, giraffes and elephants! You'll definitely want to spend several hours here exploring everything there is there before moving onto Dubbo itself. Before leaving town, be sure to stop for a relaxing morning walk at the Shoyoen Japanese Garden. Once you have added this beautiful attraction to your camera archives and stretched your legs, it's time to drive from Dubbo to Cobar.

When you arrive in Cobar, stop at Fort Bourke Hill Lookout for views over the city and surrounding countryside. Then stroll through Cobar Miners Heritage Park, with its collection of old buildings. This includes miners' cottages, a railway station, a hospital and a mine manager's residence.

Cobar to Broken Hill is a journey of rugged beauty, which takes you through the heart of New South Wales outback. Stop for a picnic and make up a gourmet platter at Peery Lake Picnic Area. Otherwise, enjoy freshly caught fish at Broken Hill Angling Club. When you arrive in Broken Hill, visit Mad Max 2 Museum. You’ll see all sorts of memorabilia from the films, including Mel Gibson's jacket from The Road Warrior!

Today’s first stop is Mildura – a small town in Victoria, Australia. Mildura is located on the banks of the Murray River. The journey from Broken Hill to Mildura is one of the most famed roads in all of Australia. You'll pass many wineries en route, as well as some beautiful parks and national parks along the way! 

When you arrive in Mildura, take a ride on a paddle steamer for an insight into life as it was for early settlers in this part of Australia. And make sure that you visit Orange World. This working 50-acre citrus property offers an array of educational tours across its picturesque property. Here you can experience everything that makes up orange growing, from seedling to harvest to packing!

Today marks the third border crossing into South Australia. You'll want to make sure you pack your camera for this one because there's no shortage of awesome scenery to capture here!

When you arrive in town, check out Headings Cliff, where you can soak up stunning views of the Murray River. Then, before you settle into your campsite for the night, stop by the Possum Parade! This ‘parade’ is not like your traditional parade of floats, but instead, a group of friendly possums descending to the banks of the river. They come down to enjoy the vegetables left for them! It is quite the spectacle and something you won’t want to miss.

There's no question that you'll want to make a stop at The Bunyip. If you've never heard of it, it's essentially a giant concrete crocodile signifying a creation story of the local Aboriginal people. You can explore the inside and then take pictures outside and learn about the creation story. 

After the Bunyip, head to Willow Point Wines Cellar Door & Bottle Shop just nearby. This winery has been around since 1853 and makes some amazing wines - including their top-selling "The Murray River." From the Muray, it's time to begin the journey towards Mount Pleasant. If you happen to find yourself here on a Saturday, be sure to stop at Mount Pleasant Farmers Market. This vintage market shed houses an enviable array of fresh food stalls and artesian delights! Then head to the Herbig Family tree to marvel at its seven-metre diameter and 24-metre high stature. 

Finally, finish the day with a stop by Robber Dog distillery and the local vineyards. There is no better way to spend the afternoon than by exploring the local distilleries and wine estates!

Adelaide is the final destination on this road trip, and so this brings us to the final day of exploring! One of the quintessential stops on an Adelaide road trip is the Barossa Valley.
